My apologies for hijacking the blog, but I thought some of you may be interested in an update on Tim’s race.

Tim is on the big island of Hawaii competing in the Ultraman World Championship. Ultraman is a 3-day long triathlon that circumnavigates the island. The race starts in Kona the day after Thanksgiving with a 10 kilometer (6.2 mile) ocean swim followed by a 90 mile bike ride. Day 2 is a 171.4 mile bike with 8,600 feet of climbing. The third and final day is a 52.4 mile double Marathon run.

The results at the end of Day 1 have Tim in 2nd place - 44 minutes behind 2004 Ultraman World Champion Jonas Colting.

Ooops...I was totally remiss in not mentioning that our own Michelle Santilhano (I think she swims in Lane 3 or 4 at 7AM) is also competing at Ultraman this year. Unfortunately I don’t have any results for her yet.

A friend of mine is crewing for one of the competitors and has posted her Day 1 pics from the race here if anyone is interested:

Tim lost a little more time to the leader at Ultraman today, but not much. At the end of Day 2 Tim is still in 2nd place, 1 hour and 11 minutes behind 2004 champ Jonas Colting. Tim also has 2003 and 2005 Ultraman World Champion Alexandre Ribeiro of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil only 32 minutes behind him.

No word on Michelle yet today, but I did hear there was one DNS and one abandon. There is a 12 hour time limit to complete each day.

I spoke with Michele a while ago, and she sounded great. She was the second woman out of the water yesterday. Woo hoo! She was happy about her results on the bike today, which was the part of the race she was most nervous about. It was very, very windy, and there was a huge climb, but she made it through sheer determination.

Congratulations, Tim and Michele! We're all cheering for you!

The final Ultraman results have Tim finishing an outstanding 3rd overall. Alexandre Ribeiro managed an incredible run to squeak by Tim for 2nd.

Michelle also finished well within the very challenging final day's cut-off.

For Heidi

I was nervous about visiting Heidi. I remembered her as an always upbeat, caring person who lit up the locker room at 5:45am and made me glad I had gotten out of bed.
