A Mile of Butterfly

No, this is not what we did this morning (thank G-d). But I have to give kudos where kudos are due, to Frances and Peter (and if there was someone else someone please enlighten me) for doing a mile of butterfly at the Rinconada meet on Saturday. Rebecca Pinto likes to call this meet the Rinky Dink Meet but, as I'm sure she would agree, there's nothing dinky about 1650 yards of butterfly.

Frances and Peter both completed the event in less than 30 minutes. That's about 4 days and 23.5 hours less than swimming a mile of fly would take me. I'm in awe.

Here's what we did this morning:

*300 free followed by 2x25 kick
*300 free followed by 2x50 quick free
~
All free, all broken in half for 2-5 seconds to check time and try to match split on second half. (Interval for Lane 2, on 1:30 base):
*1x400
*2x300
*3x200
*4x100
~
*3x100 on the 1:35, 1:25, 1:20, trying to match pace for all three
*3x100 on the 1:35, 1:25, 1:20, trying to match pace for all three
~
*4x25 fast free with decreasing rest (15 sec, 10, 5)

Hi Sarah!

Sorry if this is off topic, but I wanted to comment in a spot where it would most likely be seen and read. I'm a member of Yelp and today I discovered that Team Sheeper has an entry on their site. Nobody had submitted a review yet, so I posted a (glowing, of course!) review of the team. If you'd like to spread the word via your blog, the site is yelp.com.

And so I don't completely hijack this thread: a MILE of butterfly? Wow. I'm in awe. That's just fantastic!

Yes, there was another brave and crazy 1650 butterfly entrant--Virginia! Also under 30 minutes. I saw her swim other events too. Oh my, I did a measly 100 and am still sore. How do you butterfliers feel?

You forgot a really important person: Virginia! She had a great day at the meet. What's with the snub? I thought the Mellows had a rep for taking care of one another!

RDVKnights is my dad. I have a blog, too, and I was poking fun of myself on it for wanting someone to leave a comment about me doing the 1650 fly, too, because I couldn't do it myself without exposing myself as the big dorky ham that I am. This is just my Dad's sense of humor. I've known him all my life, and even I don't always know when he is joking. Sorry, Sarah, I knew you didn't mean to snub me.

For Heidi

I was nervous about visiting Heidi. I remembered her as an always upbeat, caring person who lit up the locker room at 5:45am and made me glad I had gotten out of bed. I knew she took great trips, and lived actively. I knew how happy she was about her son's marriage. Beyond that, I figured I didn't know her very well. I never saw her outside of Burgess, and I consider her a teammate and acquaintance, more than a dear friend. That said, thanks to the environment Tim has created, we teammates at Burgess definitely feel like a part of something bigger - a family, a support system, something. But as Sunday drew near, I considered the fact that I felt a chest cold arriving, and that I would have to depart from my children (who I see too little during the week) for hours to go visit her in San Leandro. I wondered what I would say to her and around her. I wondered if she'd even care to see me. And I almost didn't go. I will forever be glad that I went. And I encourage every one...
